On the way to the birdwatching tower on Lake Kaņieris, you can notice a whole stand of junipers. This is one of the largest juniper stands in Latvia.
Thanks to the limy growing conditions and regular grassland management, juniper stands have emerged in many places along the banks of Lake Kaņieris and on its islets. Today, the ĶNP can boast with one of the largest areas of this protected biotope “juniper stands in grasslands and heathers” in Latvia. Junipers are a resilient and modest plant that weather frost well, but it is otherwise rather demanding — it needs open, sunny areas. Therefore, to protect this very typical Latvian landscape element from perishing, it is necessary to regularly carry out plant cover removal works in juniper stands.
