Šlokenbeka Mill and Monument to M. von der Recke

Description

The Šlokenbeka mill was constructed in 1867 during the era of the Šlokenbeka and Durbe manor owner Matthias von der Recke. A small obelisk with an inscription is placed next to the millpond as a commemorative sign. There is a legend dating back to more than a century ago about how the young son of the Šlokenbeka and Durbe baron Matthias fell in love with the daughter of the Šlokenbeka miller. Both met secretly on the Šlokenbeka milldam, and the baron found out about it and was so angry that one night, when the full moon was shining and both lovers went to see each other, the baron wanted to shoot the girl. To spite the death, both lovers held hands and jumped into the pond. The baron deeply suffered over the death of his son and ordered a small commemorative obelisk to be built. In 2001, next to the old Šlokenbeka water mill, a small hydropower station was built. The waterwheel in the mill was functioning up until 1927, and with the Francis turbine it was functioning until 1967. Interestingly enough, the mill is still functioning and many local residents favour the products milled there.
