Things to do for fathers and sons in the area of Tukums
Many fathers and sons are united not only by family ties, but also by a shared passion – motorized vehicles and equipment. From generation to generation, you can pass on not only tools or car keys, but also stories, passion, and love for technology and the process of learning all about it and trying it out.
A father proudly showing his motorcycle from his youth to his son. A son sitting behind the wheel for the first time and feeling the same excitement his father once felt. This passion is not just about technology – it is about the time spent together, about values that are preserved, and about stories that never become boring.
In the vicinity of Tukums, you can experience such shared moments and hear stories about cars and motorcycles, as well as other automotive technology, by visiting “Classic Car & Motorcycle Garage” in Milzkalne, “Retro ferma” near Tukums, and the Latvian Road Museum at the Šlokenbeka Manor.

Here, you can sit in a real Zaporozhets or Zhiguli, and if you make arrangements with the host, you might even be able to go out on a test drive to feel the smell and ambience of the olden days and to hear the exciting stories of the host about each vehicle. Latvian Road Museum
Situated at the Šlokenbeka Manor, in a historic ambience, you will find the Latvian Road Museum, where you can explore the development of the road industry in Latvia — from ancient plankways and bridges, to modern tarmac-covered roads. The former residential building of the manor house presents stories about road construction, the first road signs, and the development of the road network. A separate exhibit is dedicated also to bridges– “From plankways to suspended bridges”. In the hill coach-house, visitors can peruse the collection of carts and horse harnesses, whereas in the Lower coach-house – road construction equipment, including the pride of the museum – the only preserved steam roller in Latvia manufactured in 1924 in Great Britain. In the open-air exhibition, you can find samples of various road surfaces, old road signs, stone rollers and even more than 300-year-old mileposts.
The Latvian Road Museum does not cover only road themes — it deals with topics like human activities, technological developments, and values that we often take for granted.
